The University of Guelph Alumni Association (UGAA) announced a major gift to the Building Potential campaign this weekend. The UGAA is committed to supporting university wide initiatives that will have the most impact on students. The $400,000 donation will go to naming the Student Lounge and the Climbing Wall inside the new Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre. When asked about the donation Brandon Gorman, President of the UGAA shared,
“Athletics plays such an important role on campus. Those facilities provide students, faculty and staff a place to be active. They will use the fitness centre and join the intramural leagues. The facilities will also provide the training equipment and space our varsity athletes need to be competitive. All of this helps create the community that is so unique at the University of Guelph. A community we are all proud of.”
The UGAA presented the donation at halftime to Tom Kendall, Director of Athletics and Dr. Franco Vaccarino, President and Vice-Chancellor at the 2015 Homecoming victory over McMaster. “It’s amazing to see alumni giving back like this,” said Tom Kendall, “We know these new facilities are going to create a great place for alumni to come and enjoy campus. To watch our games and join us at events. There are over 10,000 alumni residing in the City of Guelph. Their kids attend our summer camps and play sports on campus. We are very pleased that by expanding our facilities we will benefit these families and everyone in the greater community.”
