The University of Guelph, Department of Athletics officially broke ground Monday, November 10, 2014, for construction of a $60 million expansion to the Athletic Complex.
The 25,000 square foot Athletic Centre will provide athletic, health and wellness inspiration for the thousands of users on campus and in the City of Guelph. The project, to be built near the Gryphon Fieldhouse is scheduled to open September 2016. The new complex will be funded through student contributions pledged in a 2007 student referendum.
Officials from the City of Guelph, U of G and Gryphon fans, student-athletes and supporters were on hand to celebrate the occasion. University of Guelph President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vaccarino, Councillor Ward 4 and Mayor Elect for the City of Guelph Cam Guthrie, Alumnus and major donor to the project Larry Pearson, PhD student Sarah Cahill and Director of Athletics Tom Kendall all made comments.
Tom Kendall, U of G director of athletics, commented: "Our goal is to have one of the best outdoor and indoor athletics facilities in Canada to complement our leadership position in sports and recreation and to build a sense of community and connection."
With the new centre, there will be larger and better facilities to serve as gathering places for campus and community members, more diverse fitness offerings, and more intramural and varsity opportunities for U of G students, Kendall said.
The new athletic complex should be ready for use in September 2016 and the project will include:
- Two-storey 25,000 square foot fitness centre
- Suspended running track
- Varsity basketball and volleyball courts
- Climbing wall
- A number of multi-purpose rooms for fitness and recreation activities
- 2,200 seat event centre, social spaces, concession areas and new locker rooms
